Course Overview

Basic

Ancient India was not just a land of sages, saints and seers but it also produced great scholars and visionary scientists. Ancient India's contribution to science and technology is exemplary. Astronomy, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Medicine, Metallurgy were some of the subjects where our scientists had made vast strides. Ancient Indian Scientists worked on theories and researched using available materials and derived conclusions which they used largely for the welfare of the people and country. Thus, they made accurate predictions about the occurrence of eclipses, earthquakes, movement of the planets and also calculated the distance between the earth and the moon, observed the elements, conducted complicated surgeries and generally were way ahead of others in their respective field. Some of the theories and discoveries propounded by them are used even to this day.

Intermediate

Sages and saints were also able scientists who propagated unique theories in subjects ranging from mathematics, astronomy, physics, chemistry, medical science and surgery, fine arts, mechanical and production technology, civil engineering and architecture, shipbuilding and navigation, sports and games. It is amazing how well developed and advanced theories were experimented and recorded. Along with the theories the scientist seers also expounded an appropriate philosophy. It is important that the younger generation should know and understand the glory of our past with an objective mind. Each lesson in this book deals with a particular field of study like Pure Sciences, Metallurgy, Vedic Mathematics, Astronomy, Farming and Agriculture, War Sciences, Wellness and Health and also the Theory of Chāṇākya.

Advance

Ancient Indians made valuable strides in the fields of Biology, Chemistry and Metallurgy. The outstanding contributions of ancient mathematicians are well illustrated in the chapter on ‘Vedic Mathematics’. The chapter on Astronomy is quite fascinating when we get to know about the ancient astronomers and their discoveries. What is pertinent is that we learn about the far sightedness of these great scientists and the tolerance of the society they lived in. The great astronomer Bhaskaracharya was honored for his inventions in India, whereas elsewhere, another great scientist called Galileo was persecuted for his ideas in his native land. Know more about organic farming, growing seedless vegetables and fruits and methods to protect crops and increasing yields which are all recorded in the treatises in the chapter on Botany, Farming and Agriculture. The Science of waging wars was quite a well developed field. The ruling class undertook detailed lessons on the art of fighting battles along with astra shastra or the use of weaponry. Learn about these finer aspects here. Nuances of Ayurveda and the important contributors to this ancient but popular field of medicine are explained in the chapter on Medical Science. The chapter on Chanakya will help you to comprehend the relevance of his maxims and writings even to this day. Chanakya was a great thinker and writer who wrote a brilliant treatise on statecraft called Arthashastra. Chanakya gives practical lessons on statecraft, strategy and governance which are all described in this chapter. The amazing architecture as can be traced from the Harappan Civilization is described in the last chapter.
